Ajmaline test

Injection of ajmaline (a medication with sodium channel-blocking properties) and recording of the changes it causes in the heart’s electrical activity (ECG).

Purpose

To provoke or rule out abnormalities suspected to be indicative of Brugada syndrome.

Preparation

  • You do not need to fast.
  • You may continue taking your usual medication.
  • You can drive a vehicle as usual after the test.

Procedure

Duration: ... minutes

The test is performed in the functional measurements unit for cardiovascular diseases (functiemetingen hart- en vaatziekten).

  • Placement of an IV to administer the medication.
  • Setup of ECG monitoring.
  • Administration of the medication over 10 to 20 minutes, with 2-minute intervals.
  • The doctor monitors the ECG to observe for a typical ECG pattern.

After the test, you'll have to wait for another 30 minutes in the waiting area before going home.
