Biopsy during radiological examination

Removal of a small tissue sample from an organ or lesion using a needle or scalpel. This tissue sample is then further analysed.

Medical prescription required

For this examination, a prescription from your doctor is always required. Bring this prescription with you on the day of the examination.

Preparation

  • After the examination, you may not drive yourself. Arrange transport to leave the hospital.
  • Inform the nurse before the examination if you think you might be pregnant.

Procedure

The entire procedure takes about 4 hours. The biopsy itself usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes

  • You will receive a local anaesthetic at the site where the needle is inserted.
  • Using a specialised needle, small tissue samples are taken.
  • You may hear a noise at the moment the sample is taken.
  • After the procedure, it is advisable to rest for a few hours (1 to 3 hours) at the hospital.
