Repeated inflammation or infections of the bronchi cause excess mucus to accumulate in the airways. This often leads to lung infections and a persistent cough with significant mucus production.

Bronchiectasis is an abnormal damage and widening of the bronchi caused by recurring inflammation or infections.

Consequences and progression:

  • Abnormally enlarged airways.
  • Excess mucus production, accumulating in the dilated airways.
  • Damaged cilia:
    • The lungs can no longer clear dust and germs effectively.
    • Mucus accumulations become difficult to remove.
    • This often leads to lung infections.

Symptoms

The main symptom of bronchiectasis is a persistent cough, producing a large amount of mucus (sputum).

  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Occasional wheezing
