Diagnostic domains
- Characterisation of malignant (acquired) diseases
Genetic test to characterise malignant (acquired) disease in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and further follow-up of cancer patients. - Hereditary (congenital) disorders
Genetic test in case of suspected hereditary (congenital) genetic disorders - Prenatal and preconceptional testing
Various prenatal diagnostic tests in the context of childbearing and pregnancy.
Practical conduct
Request
- The CME provides specific application forms for the various diagnostic tests. To avoid possible errors and delays, these forms are preferred, and applications should be completed in a unified manner.
- The applicant should take the correct sample for the requested test. Instructions are given on the application forms, or can be obtained by telephone.
- Each sample must be correctly identified (patient's name and date of birth).
- Applications may be refused by the laboratory if they contain insufficient or incorrect data to obtain a result that meets the quality criteria in force. In this case, the laboratory notifies the applicant immediately.
- Samples need to be sent to the centre for human genetics.
Execution
The laboratory
- Determines the manner, method and equipment by which the examination will be performed, according to state-of-the-art procedures and accepted standards.
- May, if a request extends to diagnostic tests beyond the laboratory's offer, outsource the request to another laboratory at home or abroad.
- Will retain residual samples (usually DNA, leukocytes or cell cultures) after examination in accordance with its own procedures, unless otherwise agreed at the time of application.
Invoicing
- Genetic testing is reimbursed according to article 33 of the RD of 22 November 2012, article 33 bis of RD of 18.03.2011 or article 33 ter of RD of 17.5.2019.
- The co-payment is currently €8.68 and is billed directly to the patient.
Externally executed tests
For some genetic tests, CME relies on the expertise of other genetic centres. Info on these tests can also be found in the lab guide.
