What to expect from a genetic consultation at the center for human genetics?

You are referred to our department by your GP, gynaecologist or other specialist. Or perhaps you are contacting us on your own initiative because of the suspicion of a genetic disorder for yourself, your child or in your family. What does a genetic consultation involve?

Beforehand

  • At home, gather as much medical information as possible that may be relevant to the disorder in question. This will help us to form a quicker and better picture of your situation during the appointment.
  • Also make a list of all your questions. Together with you, the doctor will then consider how we can best help you and provide answers.

Consultation itself

  • At the consultation, we sometimes create a family tree (data about your family).
  • A clinical examination is also often carried out on you or your child.

Based on all the data, we then decide whether a genetic analysis is necessary.

These consultations can take place at UZ Leuven itself, but our clinical team also carries out consultations at 14 other regional hospitals in Flanders.

Genetic analysis via your blood

  • If a genetic analysis is required, a blood sample is often taken.
  • You do not have to be fasting for this blood collection.
  • The costs of a genetic analysis are largely reimbursed by health insurances.
