Successful first edition of Belgian Transplantoux Games in Leuven

26 September 2024

On 21 and 22 September, Transplantoux organised the very first edition of the Belgian Transplantoux Games in Leuven. The sporting event brought together transplant and dialysis patients, donors and sympathisers under the ‘healthy living and excercising after a transplant’ motto. Some 400 sportsmen and women competed for medals in more than 10 disciplines.

Participants of the Belgian Transplantoux Games showcased their best side last weekend during competitions in various sports, including athletics, cycling, (table) tennis, and swimming. Many of them are working towards the 2027 World Transplant Games, which will take place in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve.

The first Belgian Transplantoux games were a hit.
Prof. dr. Diethard Monbaliu

Prof. dr. Diethard Monbaliu, transplant surgeon at UZ Leuven and chairmand of Transplantoux: “The first Belgian Transplantoux games were a hit. All our objectives were covered, the first being raising awareness about organ donation. We have been able to motivated a lot of new people to exercise. The many moments of connection continue to be heartwarming and this is particularly satisfying for all those in front of and behind the scenes contributing to what Transplantoux stands for. One of our World Transplant Games medallists testified that her biggest medal was the transplant family she had met through Transplantoux. We have been able to show that  that with Transplantoux we are not a one-day wonder, but a seemingly hugely diverse group of people credibly connecting across all possible boundaries, each with their personal intense story.”

In cooperation with UZ Leuven and KU Leuven Transplantoux unites post-transplant patients and encourages them to live an active life. One of their main objectives revolves around promoting scientific research into physical activity before and after transplantation.
