UZ Leuven climbs to place 40 in new Newsweek ranking of best hospitals in the world

7 march 2025

The American magazine Newsweek and data platform Statista rranked the best hospitals in the world for the seventh year in a row: World’s Best Hospitals 2025

In it, UZ Leuven is the first Belgian hospital at position 40, which is four places higher than in 2024 and no less than eight places higher than in 2023. The hospital obtained a brilliant score of 91.39%.

Prof. dr. Paul Herijgers, CEO at UZ Leuven: “We are extremely proud of this 40th position in the Newsweek ranking, which is a clear reflection of the dedication and excellent care of our employees who continue to break ground every day. The ranking confirms our position among the frontrunners in Europe and worldwide. We also wish to congratulate our partners of the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA), all of which achieved a stellar place in the global top 100."

The ranking is a reflection of the dedication and excellent care of our employees, who continue to break ground daily.

Prof. dr. Dirk De Ridder, director of quality at UZ Leuven: “The methodology used this year to set up the ranking, has been modified substantially in comparison to previous editions, and is therefore a lot more reliable. We can consequently be very proud of the result achieved and are grateful for the commitment of all our staff who strive for the best possible quality for every patient.”

More about the methodology

Since this year, the ranking of Belgian hospitals no longer relies predominantly on recommendations by external doctors and Google-evaluations. Greater weight was now given to quality indicators (37,5%), patient experiences (17,5%) and results reported by the patient (the so-called patient-reported outcome measures or PROMs; 5%).

Newsweek and Statista continue to improve the methodology year after year. While in previous editions mainly reputation was taken into account in the scores, for the Flemish hospitals the results of the Flemish Institute for Quality of Care (Vlaams Instituut voor Kwaliteit van Zorg (VIKZ)) were used for the first time, making these hospitals objectively comparable in an international context. The recognised Flemish quality label FlaQuM was not yet included.
