The Leuven Cancer Institute (LKI) has officially been recognized as a 'Comprehensive Cancer Centre' (CCC) by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). As only the second center in Belgium to receive this prestigious accreditation, the LKI has been acknowledged for its excellence in oncology care, groundbreaking research, and high-quality training.

The OECI label, internationally recognized, marks a significant milestone in the institute’s mission: “United Against Cancer.” It highlights the LKI’s ongoing commitment to enhancing quality and patient-centered care.

“This is an exceptional recognition of the hard work and dedication of all our healthcare providers, researchers, and staff,” says Prof. Dr. Michel Delforge, Chair of the LKI. “The label not only underscores our strong multidisciplinary approach but also emphasizes our vision to continually integrate cutting-edge research with oncology care. It motivates us to set the bar even higher for our patients.”

During an extensive audit, the OECI praised several strengths of the LKI. Simon Oberst, Chair of the OECI audit team, highlighted the “impressive integration of excellent research and clinical care” and the “strong quality culture driven by innovation.” The audit team also commended the commitment and expertise of the institute’s teams, working in an inspiring environment to deliver comprehensive care to patients.

Key benefits and future perspectives

The OECI accreditation offers strategic advantages to the LKI. It strengthens the institute’s position in international collaborations, opens opportunities for European research grants, and increases its influence on European cancer policy. “This quality label is not the end but the beginning of new possibilities,” Prof. Delforge continues. “It enables us to better respond to the needs of our patients, providing targeted support for those who need it most and offering interprofessional care that extends beyond treatment alone.”

Concrete initiatives include the development of a cancer-specific patient panel to make care even more patient-focused, as well as the optimization and integration of multidisciplinary care programs. Supporting staff remains a priority to ensure ongoing innovation and quality.

About the OECI

The OECI is an international network of 159 cancer centers dedicated to fostering collaboration and improving the quality of oncology care. Through its accreditation program, in which the LKI participated voluntarily, the organization helps institutions advance in quality and innovation.
