The figures for 2023 are once again quite impressive: together, our 9,981 employees ensured the smooth running of over 776,000 consultations, about 185,000 (day)admissions and almost 58,000 surgical procedures.

In 2023, 57,920 surgical procedures were performed. This is over 1,900 more than in 2022. Per operational working day in 2023, there were on average 232 surgical procedures, 143 of which were performed in the surgical day hospital.

385 transplants

In 2023, UZ Leuven performed 385 organ transplants or 33.1% of all organ transplants in Belgium. This makes UZ Leuven the largest of the 8 transplant centres in Belgium.

Of the 129 kidney transplants, 14 were via living donation. A total of 142 lungs were transplanted during 70 double and 2 single lung transplants. 93 liver transplants, 14 heart transplants, 5 pancreas transplants and 2 small intestine transplants also took place.

In most recipients, 1 organ was transplanted. In 12 patients, a combined transplant of 2 organs was performed and in 2 patients even 3 organs were involved. With 14 combined organ transplants in 2023, UZ Leuven performed 41.2% of the 34 combined transplants in Belgium.

In 2023, 776,311 consultations took place, which is about 2% more than in 2022. Every operational working day there were on average 3,105 consultations, spread over the different campuses of UZ Leuven.

In 2023, there was a total number of 72,432 entries to the emergency room. 36% of al hospital admissions came in through the emergency room.

In 2023 there were 268,592 internal transfers of patients, e.g. to transport admittes patients to and from their function tests. 92% of the patients was collected within 10 minutes.

In 2023, 2,933 patients were treated with some type of radiotherapy, most of them with external radiotherapy. In total there were 36,202 treatment sessions.

The total number of nuclear tests (excluding tracers and therapies) came to 18,020. In 47% of the cases this was a PET scan.

The number of kidney dialysis sessions went down from 34,096 in 2022 to 32,978 in 2023.

In 2023, the total number of radiological tests amounted to 397,754. On average there were 1,090 radiological tests a day.

In 2023 there were 125,288 function tests for cardiology, respiratory diseases, endoscopy and neurophysiology.

In 2023 there were 16,161,530 lab tests. This means an average of 1,845 tests an hour and 44,278 tests a day.

810 clinical studies

In clinical trials - scientific research on humans - researchers and patients work together to find better diagnostic tools, new insights and innovative treatments.

In 2023, 810 new studies were registered at the clinical trial centre (CTC) of UZ Leuven, 234 of which were commercial studies and 576 academic.

    • In 2023, 61.7% of UZ Leuven employees came to work by car. The percentage of employees that come to work on their bike bike increased from 25.8% in 2022 to 26.4% in 2023.

    In 2023, 9.3% of employees came to work by public transport, up from 9% in 2022. Overall, 38.3% of our employees regularly came by bike and/or public transport.

    UZ Leuven promotes sustainable means of transport by offering its employees a bicycle allowance and free public transport.
