The importance of data sharing

Medical data is invaluable for the development of new treatments, scientific breakthroughs and safe and quality care, not only for the patients themselves, but also for all future patients in our hospital and society.

As a university hospital, we have a legal duty to engage in scientific research and conduct clinical studies. It is also our duty to evaluate care and medical activities, develop new technologies and provide academic education.

Sometimes we do this alone. Sometimes we engage in collaboration with academic or industrial partners. Both are necessary to continue providing the same high quality of care to everyone in the long term. Whatever projects we carry out, all are carefully selected.

If your data is reused, you will see this in the mynexuzhealth app (in the 'Projects' section).

Would you rather not share data?

In certain cases, you can oppose the reuse of your data, via an 'opt-out'.

The opt-out is only possible for data reuse outside a university hospital's statutory duties and outside the public interest. For situations where the re-use of data serves the public interest, the opt-out option does not exist.
Examples of general interest include: academic research, Cancer Registry registration, training in an academic context.

How to opt out

You can opt out in 3 ways:

  1. Via the mynexuzhealth app.
  2. Via the online opt-out form.
  3. By printing the document below and sending it completed and signed to:
    UZ Leuven administratief servicecenter
    T.a.v. opt-out hergebruik medische gegevens
    Herestraat 49
    3000 Leuven

Good to know

  • Your choice has no retroactive effect. If you oppose the reuse (opt-out), your medical data will no longer be shared from then on.
  • Only you can register your objection. A healthcare provider may not do so on your behalf.
  • You may always participate in clinical studies, whatever choice you make.
  • You may change your choice at any time.
