Medical prescription required

You will always need a prescription from your doctor for this test. Bring this prescription with you on the day of the test.

Preparation

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity in the 4 hours before the test.
  • Do not smoke for 4 hours before the test.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • You do not need to fast.
  • Certain medications must not be taken prior to the test. Your doctor will inform you about this.

Procedure

Duration: 75 minutes

  • A staff member checks your baseline lung function (spirometry) before starting the test.
  • You then sit on a cycle ergometer (a type of exercise bike).
  • A nose clip ensures you breathe only through your mouth.
  • You cycle for 6 minutes, with the resistance gradually increased during the first few minutes.
  • The cycling will require significant physical effort.
  • After the exercise, your lung function will be measured regularly over a 30-minute period.

After the exercise, your baseline lung function is measured regularly over a 20-minute period. The results will help determine whether exercise triggers asthmatic symptoms (exercise-induced asthma).
