RX large intestine

RX colon
X-ray of the large intestine (colon) using contrast fluid and X-rays.

Medical prescription required

This examination always requires a prescription from your doctor. Bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

Preparation

  • You must have fasted before an RX large intestine: do not eat, drink, or smoke for six hours before the examination.
  • The digestive tract must be completely empty for clear imaging. Therefore, along with your appointment confirmation, you will receive dietary instructions and the appropriate laxative.
  • Inform the nurse before the examination if you think you might be pregnant.

Procedure

Duration: approximately 45 minutes.

  • The radiologist inserts a small tube into the anus to administer the contrast fluid into the intestine.
    • The insertion of the tube may cause some discomfort.
    • You may temporarily experience intestinal cramps while the intestine is being filled.
    • In case of severe cramps, an antispasmodic will be administered through your arm.
  • You will need to change positions multiple times: on your stomach, back, side, standing, and lying down.
  • During the imaging process, you must remain still and briefly hold your breath.
  • After the examination, it is recommended to go to the toilet.
