RX oesophagus, stomach, duodenum

X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to visualise the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum).

Medical prescription required

This examination always requires a prescription from your doctor. Bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

Preparation

  • You must have fasted before an RX oesophagus, stomach, duodenum: do not eat, drink, or smoke for six hours before the examination.
  • The digestive tract must be completely empty for clear imaging. Therefore, along with your appointment confirmation, you will receive dietary instructions and the appropriate laxative.
  • Inform the nurse before the examination if you think you might be pregnant.

Procedure

Duration: approximately 30 minutes.

  • During the examination, you will drink approximately 300 millilitres of contrast fluid.
  • You will then swallow a few granules that help expand the stomach.
  • You will need to change positions multiple times: on your stomach, back, side, standing, and lying down.
  • The radiologist will track the movement of the contrast fluid on the screen.
  • Images will be taken at regular intervals.
    • During imaging, you must remain still and briefly hold your breath.
