RX small intestine transit

X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to assess the function of the small intestine.

Medical prescription required

This examination always requires a prescription from your doctor. Bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

Preparation

  • You must be fasting for an RX small intestine transit: do not eat, drink, or smoke for six hours before the examination.
  • The digestive tract must be completely empty for clear imaging. Therefore, along with your appointment confirmation, you will receive dietary instructions and the appropriate laxative.
  • Inform the nurse before the examination if you think you might be pregnant.

Course

Duration: 3 to 6 hours.

  • During the examination, you will drink approximately half a liter of contrast fluid.
  • After 15 minutes, the radiologist will take the first set of images.
  • Additional images will be taken at regular intervals until the small intestine is fully filled with contrast fluid.
  • During image capture, you must remain still and briefly hold your breath.
