RX swallowing test

RX swallowing function
X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to visualise the upper oesophagus (pharynx). It shows the different phases of swallowing and any swallowing disorders.

Medical prescription required

This examination always requires a prescription from your doctor. Bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

Preparation

Inform the nurse before the examination if you think you might be pregnant.

Procedure

Duration: approximately 15 minutes.

  • During the examination, you will drink contrast fluid.
  • X-ray images will be taken while you swallow.
  • The images show how you swallow.
    • They help detect any swallowing abnormalities.
    • They can also reveal ingested objects.

In cases of severe swallowing disorders, there is a possibility of choking during the examination. This is not dangerous. The radiologist will do their best to minimise this risk.
