Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)

An ultrasound test using a special probe placed on your chest to visualise the heart and the blood circulation within it using ultrasound (sound waves).

Preparation

Wear loose-fitting clothing that can be easily removed.

Procedure

Duration: about 15 to 20 minutes.

  • You lie down on the examination table on your left side.
  • The doctor will place a special probe on your chest.
    • A small amount of gel will be applied to the probe.
    • The gel is harmless but may feel slightly cold.
  • The probe will be moved across various areas of your chest.
  • During the test, you may be asked to hold your breath briefly at the doctor’s request.
