Procedure

The Doppler or ultrasound examination is a painless test.

  • A small probe, no larger than a ballpoint pen, transmits sound waves through the skin and the blood vessel wall.
  • These sound waves are reflected and picked up again by the probe.
  • The difference in frequency between the emitted and reflected signals allows for the measurement of the speed and direction of blood flow in the vessels.
  • This provides an indication of possible narrowing of the blood vessels.
