Medical prescription required

You always need a prescription from your doctor for this test. Please bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

Preparation

  • Avoid strenuous exercise in the 4 hours before the test.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • Make sure you have eaten (avoid a heavy meal).

For reliable results, we advise you not to smoke for 4 hours before the test.

Procedure

Duration: 60 minutes

  • The test always begins with a basic lung function assessment (spirometry).
  • You take a seat on a bicycle.
  • Adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest to monitor your heart’s activity (ECG).
  • A blood pressure cuff is attached to one arm and an oxygen saturation monitor to a finger.
  • Cycling will start very lightly and will become progressively more challenging each minute.
  • During the test, your inhaled and exhaled air is measured.

The oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations will be compared, providing information about your fitness level and exercise capacity.

In some cases, the doctor may need to take a blood sample from an artery before and after the test.
