Leuven doctors have developed a new model that can predict the growth of kidneys in children with the congenital kidney disease ADPKD based on 3D ultrasound images. By finding out in which children the disease will rapidly become serious, it is better to intervene in an early stage.

Mid-January 2022, the 5,000th kidney transplant took place at UZ Leuven. Prof. dr. Dirk Kuypers, head of the nephrology department, looks back on a couple of historic innovations that resulted in the excellence of the Leuven kidney transplant care programme.

Researchers involved in a European multicentre study led by Leuven-based nephrologists identified a new biomarker which, via a simple blood test, can demonstrate much earlier which patients are showing signs of rejection by antibodies following a kidney transplant.
