General X-ray
X-rays (RX) are absorbed by certain tissues in the body. The rays that pass through are used to create an image of the tissues: the X-ray image.

Specific examinations

For the X-rays listed below, an appointment is required. You can find details on booking an appointment and the procedure on the relevant examination page.

Mammography

An X-ray of the breast, where the breast is placed on an X-ray plate to visualise the glandular tissue structure and detect any abnormalities.

RX colpo-cysto-defaecography (CCD)

Determining the function of the pelvic floor using X-rays. Mainly used for urinary and bowel problems (incontinence, constipation, prolapse...).

RX large intestine

X-ray of the large intestine (colon) using contrast fluid and X-rays.

RX oesophagus, stomach, duodenum

X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to visualise the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum).

RX rectum

X-ray of the rectum (endorectum) to assess the function of the pelvic floor and sphincter during defecation.

RX small intestine transit

X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to assess the function of the small intestine.

RX small intestine with probe

X-ray of the small intestine using contrast fluid and X-rays.

RX swallowing test

X-ray with contrast fluid and radiation to visualise the upper oesophagus (pharynx). It shows the different phases of swallowing and any swallowing disorders.

General X-Ray

No appointment needed

A general X-ray always requires a prescription from your doctor. Please bring this prescription on the day of the examination.

  • No need to book an appointment.
  • Gasthuisberg: weekdays between 08:00 and 17:00.
  • Pellenberg: weekdays between 08:00 and 16:00.

Preparation

Before a general X-ray, inform the nurse if you think you might be pregnant.

Procedure

Duration: approximately 5 to 10 minutes

  • For a general X-ray, you must remove clothing covering the area being examined.
  • Remove all jewellery.
  • Do not move while the images are being taken.
  • Several short images will be taken, each from a different angle.
