Shortness of breath, dry cough and fatigue
The main complaint is shortness of breath, a symptom that often develops gradually and becomes increasingly prominent. Frequently, this symptom has been present for a long time before the patient consults a doctor and the diagnosis is made.
Other common complaints include a dry cough and fatigue.
Usually non-specific
It is clear that the symptoms are not specific, and it often takes time to establish the correct diagnosis.
On questioning, it often turns out that patients have had difficulties climbing stairs, mowing the lawn, or performing other moderately strenuous activities for a year or two, but they have gradually adapted to these limitations.
Specific symptoms depending on the type
Other complaints depend on the type of interstitial lung disease. Sometimes abnormalities develop at the level of fingers and nails, which are called drumstick fingers or watch-glass nails.
Patients with underlying inflammatory diseases will also show symptoms specific to these conditions.
Multiple tests required
To make an accurate diagnosis, a series of tests must be carried out.
