This department mainly accommodates patients after surgery falling under the disciplines of ear, nose and throat disease, head and neck surgery (ENT-HNS), oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) as well as plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

Hearing problems have a major impact on quality of life and can lead to anxiety, depression and social isolation. On average, people wait seven to ten years to seek help. Around 466 million people worldwide suffer from hearing problems. By 2050, there will be an estimated 900 million.

Digital follow-up for first patients with hearing implants

For the first time UZ Leuven doctors and audiologists are testing telemonitoring in patients that were given a cochlear implant for the treatment of their loss of hearing. A new app makes digital follow-up possible for patients. As a result they don't have to come to the hospital that often for check-ups.

Study sheds new light on cause of loss of smell in COVID-19

Loss of smell is a common symptom of COVID-19. Flemish doctors have taken tissue samples of deceased COVID-19 patients and have discovered that the virus infects the supporting cells of the olfactory mucosa, but not the nerve cells with the odorant receptors. The olfactory bulb in the brain was also spared.

Doctors construct new outer ear from rib cartilage

About 1 in 6,000 babies is born with a deformed or absent pinna at one or both ears. This rare disorder is called microtia. UZ Leuven has a technique in place where a new pinna is constructed from the patient's own rib cartilage. Since 2015, 13 children have successfully undergone such a pinna reconstruction.
