Pain in children

We make every effort to prevent pain in patients. With children, we make extra efforts to prevent them from suffering trauma or becoming chronic pain patients later in life.

We use all kinds of child-sized tools for this, ranging from anaesthetic plasters to virtual reality glasses that distract children during painful procedures.

In the day hospital, children come to the hospital for a day for certain therapies and tests that require some preparation (e.g. sedation, IV line, etc.).

The disciplines of cardiology, nephrology, urology, metabolic diseases, organ transplantation and general infant care are housed at this hospitalisation unit of the children's hospital (ages 0 to 16 years).

‘Kinderen genezen is ook een beetje Kunst ‘ Het Fonds ‘Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis’ wil kunst, in al zijn vormen, opnemen in het genezingsproces van kinderen en zo de totale zorg verbeteren.

Rune Fonds voor kindercardiologisch onderzoek

Het fonds wil het onderzoek naar behandeling van kinderen met een aangeboren of verworven hartafwijking bevorderen en ondersteunen door middel van onderzoek naar hartafwijkingen en medefinanciering van behandelingen waarvoor geen standaard of alternatieve financiering voorhanden is.

Kinderen vechten tegen een chronische ziekte

In 2019 werd Petit CRU (Pediatric Clinical Research Unit) opgericht, een uniek onderzoekscentrum in het kinderziekenhuis dat zich specifiek bezig houdt met klinische wetenschappelijke studies bij kinderen, van gentherapie tot het ontwikkelen van nieuwe geneesmiddelen.

First treatment with reimbursed gene therapy Zolgensma at UZ Leuven

At the end of 2021 the reimbursement of the gene therapy Zolgensma® for the treatment of the rare nerve disorder SMA was approved in Belgium. Recently, doctors at UZ Leuven were able to treat a first patient with the commercial product. In case of a timely diagnosis Zolgensma® can influence the severity of the disease.

Interactive e-learning helps chronically ill children and youngsters on the road from paediatric to adult care

The paediatric departments of UZ Leuven launch the interactive tool ‘Onderweg: transitie binnen kindergeneeskunde’ for chronically ill children and younsters and their parents. The 4 e-learnings with tips, information and personal stories offer extra support in the run-up to the step from paediatric to adult care.

Computer algorithms to diagnose juvenile arthritis

12 March 2019
A team of scientists at VIB and KU Leuven developed a machine learning algorithm that can diagnose arthritis in children with almost 90% accuracy, purely on the basis of a blood test. The new findings open the door to the use of machine learning for faster diagnosis and personalised treatment.
