Research participants at UZ Leuven - Privacy

Scientific research is also part of the statutory tasks of a university hospital, in addition to patient care and training. The research conducted at UZ Leuven comprises both basic research and clinical research and includes both research with a view to further developing knowledge about diseases or treatments and research in the context of the educational path of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and so on, such as master's theses and doctoral theses.

Typically, scientific research is carried out either on the basis of pre-existing data collected in the context of your care or a previous scientific study (this is called retrospective research), or by collecting new data specifically for the purpose of a particular study and using them, whether or not in combination with older data from participants, for the purpose of the study (this is called prospective research). Your data may also be processed for scientific research on human body material (such as blood, urine, tissue ...).

UZ Leuven also attaches great importance to your privacy when conducting scientific research. A separate privacy statement has therefore been drafted in which you will find more information on how your data are handled and which rights you have when your data are used for scientific research.
