Coughing up sputum or mucus after inhaling a saline solution. Sputum is mucus mixed with saliva that you cough up from the deep airways during respiratory infections. The sputum is then analysed.

Medical prescription required

You will always need a prescription from your doctor for this test. Bring this prescription with you on the day of the test.

Preparation

No specific preparation is required for sputum induction.

For a reliable result, we recommend not smoking for 4 hours before the test.

Procedure

Spirometry is always performed before sputum induction.

Duration: 45 minutes.

  • You first receive 4 puffs of a bronchodilator through a spacer (plastic reservoir between the mouth and the inhaler).
  • After 15 minutes, a spirometry test is then performed.
  • Using a nebuliser, you inhale a saline solution for a few minutes. This will be repeated up to 2 times.
  • In between, you are asked cough up sputum (mucus) into a collection container.
  • The sputum will be sent to the laboratory for further analysis.
  • You then receive 4 more puffs of a bronchodilator through a spacer.
  • After 15 minutes, the test concludes with another spirometry.

Sputum induction is a completely safe and painless procedure.
