Welcome to Dagziekenhuis 2

You will soon undergo a treatment or procedure via Dagziekenhuis 2. The pathway you will follow after the procedure will always be communicated to you in advance.

There are three possible scenarios:

  1. After your procedure, you return to Dagziekenhuis 2 and can go home the same day (day admission).
  2. After your procedure, you stay for one night in Hospitalisatie 36 (overnight stay).
  3. After your procedure, you stay longer in a hospital ward.

Preparing for your admission

Concise checklist

  • Please read the information below carefully regarding hygiene, fasting, what to bring, and going home after your procedure.

To make things easier for you, we have summarised the key points in a concise checklist that you can print yourself to ensure you are well prepared for your visit to Dagziekenhuis 2.

Anaesthesia

Before any procedure or treatment under general or local anaesthesia, an assessment must be carried out by the anaesthetist. This takes place during the preoperative anaesthesia consultation.

Anaesthesia appointment

The anaesthesia consultation is available by appointment only.

Anaesthesia dept. contact details

During the consultation, you will receive information about the type of anaesthesia, possible side effects, and any medication you need to take or stop before the procedure. You will also be given guidelines on fasting before the operation.

In some cases, a pre-anaesthesia consultation is not required. Instead, you will need to complete a preoperative file and return it to the preoperative anaesthesia consultation. If this applies to you (you will be informed during your consultation with the surgeon), you must send the preoperative file back no later than one week before your scheduled procedure or examination. This can be done by post, email, or fax. You can find the anaesthesia department's contact details above.

A procedure for your child

  • Further down this page, you will find information about specific arrangements for children. For patients under the age of 18, one parent may accompany the child into the operating theatre up to the point of anaesthesia induction. One parent may also be present in the recovery room.
  • We have developed a special brochure for young children called "Oskar in de operatiekamer" (only available in Duch, illustrated). By going through it together with your child, you can explain and show what will happen on the day of the procedure.
  • Do you still have serious concerns after the anaesthesia consultation about how your child will experience the day of the procedure? If so, you can contact the Prosa team. If needed, they will create a personalised plan for your child. For questions and scheduling: prosa@uzleuven.be.

Questionnaires

If you have access to your record via the mynexuzhealth app or via the website mynexuzhealth.com, be sure to check whether all received questionnaires have been completed. Your answers are important to ensure the procedure goes smoothly. The nurse will review this information on the day of the procedure.

Visit the mynexuzhealth page on our website for more information about accessing your medical record (possibilities, how to install the app, etc.). You'll also find a link to an instructional video on completing the questionnaires.

Hygiene

You must wash yourself thoroughly the evening before or on the day of the procedure. Your doctor will provide the correct guidelines.

Your doctor will also inform you whether you are allowed to shave the area to be operated on. In some cases, you should not do this yourself to avoid local skin infections. If necessary, hair removal will be carried out at the day hospital.

Before coming to the hospital, remove all makeup, nail polish, artificial nails or gel nails, jewellery, piercings, and contact lenses.

Fasting

It is crucial that you strictly follow the fasting guidelines. Click on the link below to see the exact instructions you need to follow.

Were you given different guidelines by phone? Then follow that advice.

For babies who are bottle-fed: bring the breastmilk/formula with you to the hospital, you can give it after the procedure.

What time should you arrive?

At Dagziekenhuis 2, we aim to keep waiting times as short as possible. That’s why a member of our planning team will contact you one working day before your procedure to inform you of the exact admission time.

If your procedure is scheduled for Monday, you will be contacted on the Friday before.

Unexpected schedule changes

Due to unforeseen circumstances, your procedure may be moved forward or delayed. Please take this into account.

This is why it is very important that we have the correct phone number to reach you at all times.

Unable to attend or running late

If, due to circumstances or illness, you are unable to come on the day of the procedure or if you are running late, please inform us in time to minimise disruptions to the surgery schedule.

What should you bring?

Please read the instructions carefully via the link below. For admission to Dagziekenhuis 2, we ask that you bring a maximum of 1 piece of hand luggage. If you need to stay in the hospital for a longer period, we ask that your luggage be brought later to the hospitalisation ward where you are staying. Please leave money and valuables at home.

Course of your admission

Who will accompany you?

What if you are discharged on the same day?

  • Be accompanied by no more than two adults. For children, both parents may come along, but not brothers, sisters or other children.
  • Accompanying persons can wait in the waiting room of Dagziekenhuis 2 or elsewhere in the hospital, such as the visitors' cafeteria or the coffee bar on the Gasthuisberg campus.
  • Accompanying persons will collect the patient from Dagziekenhuis 2. They will be notified via the screens in the waiting room of Dagziekenhuis 2: the patient’s photo and/or call number will appear with the message "Deur 2", followed by the patient's room or chair number.
  • It is best for companions to bring a wheelchair to Dagziekenhuis 2 to ensure smooth transport of the patient after surgery. Wheelchairs are available in the entrance hall at Toegang Oost.
  • Important: Dagziekenhuis 2 closes at 19:00. Please make sure the patient is picked up by 18:40 at the latest.

What if you are admitted for one or more nights?

  • Be accompanied by no more than two adults. This helps to avoid unnecessary crowds and ensures a calm environment for our patients.
  • For patients under 18, both parents may come along, but not brothers, sisters or other children.
  • As soon as the patient leaves for the operating theatre, the accompanying person may return home.
  • For patients under 18, one parent may accompany the child into the operating theatre. After anaesthesia induction, this accompanying person must leave the operating room and may take a seat in the waiting room.
  • If an accompanying person would like to visit the patient later, they can do so during visiting hours at the relevant ward.
  • The patient’s hand luggage will be sent along to the hospital ward.

Registration and check-in

On the day of your procedure, report directly to the reception of Dagziekenhuis 2 at the agreed time, unless you have prior appointments in another department.

Do not check in first at the registration desk at the Toegang Oost entrance.

  • Our staff will go through the administrative process with you and provide any additional information if needed.
  • You will receive an identification bracelet, which you must wear throughout your stay.
  • Then, take a seat in the waiting room.
  • You will be called via the screen and directed to door 2, where a nurse will come to collect you.
  • Please note that patients are not called in order of arrival.
  • Eating or drinking is not allowed in the waiting area. If your companion wishes to eat, they can do so in the visitors' cafeteria De Vier or the coffee bar.

Prefer not to have your photo displayed on the call screen?

  • By default, the call screen displays your queue number along with your photo. If you would prefer not to have your picture displayed, please inform the reception staff at the day hospital during check-in. If you use mynexuzhealth, you can also disable the display of your photo (via the ‘Profile’ menu).

Preparing for your procedure

  • The nurse will take you from the waiting room to your room. A maximum of two people may accompany you.
  • The nurse will check your identity, the side of the operation, your blood pressure, pulse, medication, weight, etc.
  • You will be given a surgical gown to wear.
  • If necessary, the surgeon will mark the surgical site.
  • If necessary, the nurse will perform a few more operations, e.g. take blood, insert a drip, ask for a urine sample, take a swab, administer a sedative, etc.
  • The operating theatre nurse will accompany you to the operating theatre.
  • Only in patients under 18, one parent may accompany you to the operating theatre. After initiation of anaesthesia, the parent must leave the operating theatre.

Personal belongings

  • If you stay with us in day admission, your personal belongings can be safely stored in the cloakroom. Please note that space in the cloakroom is limited.
  • If you need to spend one or more nights in a hospitalisation ward, your hand luggage will travel with you.

In both cases, we recommend you only bring essential items.

During and immediately after your procedure

In the operating theatre

During the operation, the anaesthetist will watch over you. More info on anaesthesia can be found on our anaesthesiology webpage.

In the recovery room (only after general anaesthesia)

If you were given a general anaesthetic during your operation, you will first be taken to the recovery room afterwards. You will stay there until you are fully awake and any pain and nausea are well under control.

No accompanying persons are allowed in the recovery room to avoid unnecessary crowding and ensure patient peace and quiet. Only in patients under 18, one parent may accompany you to the recovery room.

If everything is in order:

  • for day admission, you will go to the aftercare area of Dagziekenhuis 2.
  • if you are staying one or more nights, you will be transferred from the recovery room to your hospital ward.

If you did not receive general anaesthesia, you will not go to the recovery room after the procedure. You may either go straight home or stay in the aftercare area of Dagziekenhuis 2 for a while.

Post-operative care at Dagziekenhuis 2 (only for day admission)

In the aftercare area of Dagziekenhuis 2, you will be monitored until you are ready for discharge.

  • Your vital signs will be monitored, and if necessary, additional medication will be given for pain or nausea.
  • Depending on the procedure, you may be given something to eat and drink.
  • The recovery time varies from one to six hours, depending on the procedure.
  • The doctor and nurse will give you instructions on pain management and wound care at home. Follow these carefully.
  • You will also receive your prescriptions, certificates, follow-up appointments, and a letter for your GP.
  • A maximum of two accompanying persons are allowed in the aftercare area.

Need a certificate or document from the doctor?

  • After the operation, the surgeon will inform you about the procedure and any important points to consider.

If you need certificates or documents to be completed, please take this moment to ask the doctor.

Going home after a day admission

  • You may leave Dagziekenhuis 2 after permission from the doctors and when you feel sufficiently recovered.
