Observership - active internship - fellowship

Thank you for showing interest in our institution. We hope that we will be able to assist you in broadening your exposure and achieving your academic goals. We offer a number of fellowships, internships and observerships. The options available to you will depend on your level of training, country of origin, time available for administrative purposes as well as availability of places. The flowchart below outlines what we can offer as well as the requirements for each position. This will assist you in showing what options are available to you.

Please note the following for the observerships:

  • We advise you to apply at least 6 months prior to your desired start date.
  • The maximum duration is 3 months.
  • You will not be allowed to have any patient contact during your observership

Please note the following for the active internships:

  • We advise you to apply at least one year prior to desired start date (2 years in case of locoregional anesthesia). This is to ensure availability as well as to allow sufficient time for administrative processes required for you to have patient contact.
  • We advise a period of at least 3 months for an active internship. The maximum duration is 5 months (6 months or more is considered as a fellowship – see below).
  • Please can you indicate 3 areas of interest in your application.
  • You will need to be paired with a trainee from our hospital in order to be orientated within our systems as well as due to the challenges that arise due to language differences.
  • Language requirements: One of the required documents when requesting a visum to practice medicine in Belgium, is an official proof of CEFR language level C1 in Dutch, French OR German. Without the necessary language level, you will not receive the visum and therefore cannot do an active internship (only an observership is possible).
  • To apply for an active internship position, the following is required when you make contact with us:
    • Updated curriculum vitae
    • Motivational letter (please include your areas of interest here as well as your preferred start date and duration)
    • Two letters of recommendation
    • Proof of proficiency in English (minimum B2-level)
    • Please send your application to janine.hughes@uzleuven.be, steve.coppens@uzleuven.be and anesthesiologie.secretariaat@uzleuven.be in one the following months: January, May or September. Applications will be discussed at the beginning of February, June and October.

For the fellowships please note the following:

  • Deadlines for application:
    • Locoregional: 3 years prior to desired start date. Applications should be submitted by the 31st of May (thus for year 2028, application submitted by 31 May 2025).
    • Cardiothoracic: for non-EU applicants it is advisable to submit your application at least 2-3 years prior to your desired start date. For EU-based applicants 1-2 years prior to the desired start date is advised.     • Obstetrics +/- general anaesthesia: 2 years prior to desired start date. Applications should be submitted by 31st of May.
    • Paediatrics: this fellowship is only available to Belgian and Dutch trainees. This fellowship is in combination with a training hospital in Nijmegen. Exposure to both intensive care and paediatric anaesthesia during a one year fellowship.   • Minimum duration is 6 months. The maximum duration is 1 year (although exceptionally longer terms can be negotiated).
  • Language requirements: One of the required documents when requesting a visum to practice medicine in Belgium, is an official proof of CEFR language level C1 in Dutch, French OR German. If you are offered a position for a fellowship or active internship, we require the following documents from you prior to your start:

  • Updated curriculum vitae
  • Digital photograph
  • Scanned copy of identity document (both sides)
  • Diploma basic medical degree
  • Visum to practice medicine in Belgium
  • Registration with the Order of Physicians (Orde der Artsen) in Belgium

For non EU applicants: We will assist you in getting the visum to practice medicine in Belgium. Please note these are separate processes, also requiring a number of documents (some with official translation). It is extremely important that applicants apply and submit documents on time as these processes can take a number of months. Once these processes are completed, you will need to apply for a student visa from the Belgian embassy in your home country.

In addition for EU applicants:

  • Recognition of basic medical degree in Belgium (this takes a minimum of 4 months)
  • Diploma specialist medical degree (if applicable)
  • Recognition of specialist medical degree in Belgium (if applicable)
  • Document stating RIZIV number

In case of inability to do a fellowship or change of plans due to any circumstance, please contact us as soon as possible so we can accommodate somebody else. In case of late cancellation without valid reason, this will lead to the inability to do any fellowship at UZ Leuven in the future.
