The cardiac surgery department has grown to become the largest cardiac surgery centre in Belgium. Both adults and children can undergo heart surgery here.

Our department specialises in the surgical treatment of congenital heart defects, heart failure, valve disease, coronary artery disease and large blood vessels.

UZ Leuven largest centre in Belgium for life-saving PEA treatment

UZ Leuven saccounts for the largest number of pulmonary endarteriectomies in Belgium, with remarkably good survival rates. The cardio-surgeons and pulmonologists involved nurture an ambitious vision for the future: centralise the procedure even more and aim for at least 33 operations a year.

Professor Paul Herijgers to become new CEO of UZ Leuven

On 1 August 2024 prof. dr. Paul Herijgers will become the new CEO of UZ Leuven. He will take over the baton from prof. dr. Wim Robberecht, who will end his tenure and retire on 31 July 2024.

UZ Leuven team supports cardiac surgery in Nicaragua for a week

At the end of January 2023 ten UZ Leuven employees went on a mission to Nicaragua, under the supervision of World Heart Caregivers. Together with the local nurses, they rolled up their sleeves for a week at the operating theatre in the capital Managua.
