Checks during surgical procedures

Before any procedure, healthcare providers perform a series of checks to ensure you receive the correct surgery. For example, during operations, a marking will be made on the surgical site. Learn more about this time-out procedure.

Marking the skin

If you are undergoing surgery where mistakes could occur (e.g. left versus right side), the doctor will make a marking on the surgical site before the operation. This involves the doctor using a marker to draw an arrow on your skin. This marking is done in consultation with you.

The marking is harmless and will disappear after a few days when washed with soap and water.

Asking questions

Before the procedure, healthcare providers will ask you a few questions to confirm the correct procedure, the correct side, and the correct patient. If you have any questions at that moment, don’t hesitate to ask.

Checklist: nothing is forgotten

In addition, healthcare providers follow a checklist (safe surgery) before you are put under anaesthesia, just before the incision, and after the procedure. This checklist ensures that a standard set of elements is reviewed at each stage.
