Sustainable and varied

Sustainable - circular

UZ Leuven contributes to the goals of Leuven 2030, which is committed to creating a climate-neutral city with reduced emissions and a sustainable future. We are also actively working on sustainability. Here are some of our achievements and what’s in the pipeline:

  • Paper cutlery for patients
  • Wooden stirrers, stainless steel spoons, and PLA spoons
  • Glass jars
  • Porcelain coffee cups
  • Seasonal products
  • Free tap water
  • Less red meat
  • Daily vegetarian options
  • Measuring and preventing waste
  • R-PET containers
  • Coffee grounds collection.

Waste reduction

We aim to minimise food waste. For example, we donate our surplus to Poverello, an organisation that gives families in need the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal.

Coffee grounds are also collected by a partner to be processed into fertiliser or used as a substrate for growing mushrooms.

Sustainable fish

Wild, traceable, and sustainable: the blue label is synonymous with wild-caught fish, shellfish, and molluscs from fisheries certified according to the MSC standard, a scientifically based benchmark for sustainable fishing.
At UZ Leuven, we aim to offer as many fish species as possible with this certification. This ensures we know what we are buying, from whom, and that fishing is performed on non-threatened species.

Variety

Our range is expanding!

We don’t just offer the classic meat and potato dishes, but also many vegetarian and vegan alternatives. We are making a big effort to provide a suitable option for everyone.

How about our vegan and veggie pasta with mushroom sauce, vegan burger, wok with soy strips and noodles, vegan mashed potatoes, vegetable sauce with vegetarian mince, chili sin carne, vegan curry, vegan gyros, and more? Additionally, there’s a daily veggie soup and a suggestion meal available.
