Follow-up with the cardiologist
Your post-operative follow-up will be managed by your cardiologist, who will see you regularly to monitor your heart function. Upon discharge, a first post-operative check-up will be scheduled with your cardiologist approximately 6 to 8 weeks after your surgery. If you were not previously under cardiology follow-up, we will discuss with you where a control consultation can be arranged.
Follow-up by the cardiac surgery unit
Certain procedures (such as aortic surgery, LVAD implantation, or intravenous antibiotic treatment at home for endocarditis) or post-operative complications (such as wound healing issues) require further follow-up by a cardiac surgeon. If necessary, you will receive the appropriate follow-up appointments upon discharge from the hospital.
Visit to your General Practitioner
It is advisable to inform your general practitioner about your surgery and schedule a consultation within the first week after your hospital discharge. If any symptoms arise after the operation, your GP will be your first point of contact to assess their severity and determine the appropriate course of action. In case of doubt or warning signs, you (or your GP) can contact your cardiologist or our unit.
When should you contact your doctor/GP?
Once at home, certain symptoms may appear that require medical attention. Do not hesitate to contact your GP if you experience:
- Persistent fever (above 38.5 °C for more than two days)
- Wound healing issues
- Irregular and rapid heartbeat
- Increased shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Unusual weight gain (more than half a kilogram per day)
- New or worsening (wound) pain
